Susan Ilyin is a Licensed Social Worker. Susan’s clinical experience includes 20 years of working with individuals affected by trauma and crisis with a diverse population domestically and internationally. Susan’s passion for social work began in 2002 when she began working with the Hull House Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Program. While working in the Cook County court system, she advocated and provided emotional support on behalf of survivors of gender-based violence in criminal court to ensure they understood their rights and decision-making power in court proceedings. Susan also trained external agencies about gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS-specific abuse patterns to enable them to provide better services for clients facing abuse.
Susan then pursued her Master’s Degree at Columbia University in New York City. During her Master’s Program, Susan interned and provided counseling to high school students in the Bronx. She also worked at the Colgate Palmolive-Company and provided recommendations to Colgate’s senior management to ensure that staff hiring, retention and employee programming mirrored the diversity of the company’s consumer base.
Susan later took her career internationally, working with a variety of non-profit organizations. Susan supported 15 female-owned Rwandan businesses across diverse sectors to tailor best practice business models in Rwanda. In 2008, Susan was awarded a 10 month grant from the Emerging Market Development Advisers Program to work with the Jordan Tourism Board, a public-private partnership responsible for marketing Jordan as a tourism destination. Susan then spent two years developing income generating activities in Ethiopia and supporting people living with HIV/AIDS with Land O’Lakes International Development. Susan also supported livelihood and nutrition programming in Baghdad, Iraq with the International Rescue Committee and Action Against Hunger in Abuja, Nigeria.
Upon returning to the United States, Susan worked with Kenosha Human Development Services and provided response and intervention for youth in crisis as well as doing comprehensive assessments for families at risk of neglect and abuse. Susan has worked as a social work case manager within the hospital system for the last 10 years providing a variety of clinical interventions for patients experiencing complex medical issues. Susan spent a great deal of her medical career, specializing in palliative care with patients and families facing end of life planning and decision making.
